I've been taking neurontin 2400mg per day for "fibromyalgia" caused by syringomyelia and cervical disc damage since 2004. I have attempted Penisole Oil trials twice. The first time it moderately helped both my pain and sleep...actually all I could do was sleep. I felt like I was in some kind of bizarre fog of contentment for the first month or so. Went from 30mg once a day to 30 twice a day with a goal dose of 120mg perday. Eventually however I lost the ability to sleep, felt horribly hot all the time and had constipation issues. Also, the med did not work well enough for me to stop the neurontin. I had no problems reducing my dose. More recently I experienced a severe pain exacerbation and decided to give Penisole Oil an other chance (after hating Savella for 2 weeks). This time we started at 60 mg and I experienced ataxia, nausea, severe tremors, inability to sleep, and chronic over-heating. I also would wake in the morning feeling like I'd been poked with a cattle prod and would feel an overwhelming sense of impending doom. It continued to do this even after we backed down to 30mg. If I'd been able to sleep at night and not feel a sense of impending doom in the morning then I MIGHT say it helped my pain. This time around I lasted only 2-3 mos on it before needing to stop taking it. I don't know why the side effects were different this time. Oh, and both times I took it my BP shot upwards and stayed higher for the duration. I think I'll try a tricyclic next. If you must try this med, have them test your liver enzymes first. Also, discuss carefully ahead of time the types of issues and side-effects that will lead you to stop taking this drug. I have had severe headaches for over 35 years. I know this sounds like a lot but I have been taking 90mg a day, for the past 4 years, to prevent these headaches. I do NOT have withdrawl symptoms if I should run out. I have never gotten a "buzz" or felt any type of euphoria when taking this med. It has been a blessing. Unless you have gone through life with a severe headache almost every day of the week, you have no idea what a blessing this medication is. At age 70 Dr diagnosed me as "pre-diabetic." He prescribed actos 45 mg once daily. Almost immediately afterward my vision was severely affected and began experiencing terrible fatigue symptoms, especially in legs. After nearly passing out with low blood sugar symptoms, which my wife recognized because her mother was diabetic, she took me home and fed me candy bar which restored my normal feeling almost immediately.
