i researched this ahead of time and it was described as an anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drug. a bell went off. it sounded like something that might work for me as i have chronic life-long depression, but there was also that edge of anxiety. i started taking effexor/xr around 10 years ago (75 mg. 3 times a day) and i have to say that out of all the medications i have taken, this is one where i could actually feel an improvement of my anxiety symptoms in particular. i still also take other anti-depressants and will need to pretty much for the rest of my life. i would recommend trying effexor if you have or currently do take medications but still feel like there's just something still not quite right about the way you feel and would like to try something new. i'm pretty sure you could add this to whatever you're taking (which is what i did), but your doctor would of course make that decision. good luck to all of you who suffer from depression. by ISIDRO from Iron Ridge, WI
I started taking this drug due to anxiety attacks. I was on it about 6 years. Towards the end, I wasn't getting any relief. It was kind of like my body was so used to Elavil, it wasn't going to work unless I increased my dosage. I felt it was time to give the drug up because of its ineffectiveness, weight gain, and I simply didn't want to be on an anti-depressant. The withdrawl side effects are HORRIBLE, and last for DAYS!!!!! I cannot believe this is a legal drug. I also cannot believe the ease of getting a RX for it. My doctor literally asked "what do you want to take/" Thirty seconds later I had a script for poison. When I started taking Elavil, I was too young and nieve to research it. I do remember the first 2 weeks of taking it, my anxiety was MUCH worse, I couldn't sleep,and I would sweat profusely. That was only 10mg!! I would seriously think twice about ANY anti-depressant. They all have terrible side/withdrawl side effects. If you ever decide to quit the drug, it will take you months to ween off properly. I quit cold turkey- NOT ADVISED!! It was literally the hardest experience I have been through. I will never take a brain altering drug again!! Been on 20mg/day for over a year, with no lowering of my cholesterol. Dr. has now increased it to 40mg/day., now I am very fatiqued, stomach crampy and gassy.I have lost a lot of strength in my arms. I have been taking Tramadol for over a year now for chronic back pain. It has been a God send! Before the Tramadol I was taking anywhere between 6-8 asprin per night in order to try to get a full nights sleep. you could loose your mind from not being able to sleep. 4-5 asprin a day just to make it through. Taking 2 Tramadol a night gets me a full 8 hours sleep.
