I started at 10 mg and had some nausea and insomnia only for the first week. The drug was not helping my mood so I ramped to 20 mg then to 40 mg over the course of a month. Luckily, I've had no weight gain, but I have had serious sexual dysfunction. This drug was advertised as not causing these problems, but by 40 mg my genitals were completely numb. Mood improvement started at 20 mg but once I got to 40 mg all hell broke loose. I started having extreme anxiety (feeling all "wound up") to the point where people at work thought I was seriously stressed and about to break. I got uncontrollable hand shaking (I couldn't write or eat with a fork), night terrors, breaks with reality, auditory hallucinations and head and leg heaviness (felt like wood). I finally wound up in the hospital with convulsive fits. I really didn't want to take this drug anymore, but my pdoc left me on it at 20 mg. I have been OK at this dosage- noticeable mood improvement (and no standard SSRIs have worked well for me). No terrible side effects, but still the sexual stuff (no numbness but lack of function) and constant leg bouncing. I guess I just reached a threshold where my body couldn't deal with it. The effects of this drug escalate quickly with dosage, so I'd go really slow with it. I have fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, a bulging disc, degenerative disc disease, mild neuropathy, myofacitis. I take morphine ER, Norco, Soma, and Dilaudid for breakthrough pain, or when I have a kidney stone. Buspar did absolutely nothing for my pain. All it did was make me dizzy and feel high. If I wanted to feel high I could go and get a medical marijuana card, but I don't. I want to feel normal. Buspar did nothing to make me feel normal. I was taking 75mg. I was on .5 Buspar daily for about a year. I finally got to the point where I wanted to get off of it and see if I could handle life without it. I was very scared and reluctant to do so after reading all the horrible reviews about being addicted and having horrible withdrawl symptoms from this med. I consulted with my Dr. and I took .25 mg for 3 weeks, then one half of that pill for 2 weeks and am thrilled to say I had minimal effects while getting off of the drug. For those of you who are scared to start or stop this drug because of the effects, it CAN be done. As long as you have the will and strength to overcome the mental side of it, anybody can do it.
