I have had chronic pain due to multiple jaw joint surgeries that were done in the 80's and the last jaw surgery in 1995. It took me a long time to finally find pain management drs. Back in the 1990's there were very few drs. willing even to prescribe codeine for my pain. They would get so nervous about that! I get a bad cough two to three times a year and always ask for this. It helps immensely and is not habit forming (unless you count not wanting to hack and cough a habit lol)! 3 times a day is the minimum I would say though. It starts to wear off after 4-5 hrs. Gabapentin is prescribed for my chronic migraines and fibromyalgia. Over the past 2-3yrs, the doseage has been increased, now at 2400mg. daily. It was described to me as a preventive med for migraines, and it was just icing on the cake that it would also diminish fibro pain and other symptoms. As I plateaued, doseage was increased. Instead of getting migraines that were off the pain range of 0-10, 3-4x/wkly, lasting for a few days up to a few wks., I now get 2-4migraines during a 2wk period, and I have 3 abortive meds to deal with them. If it has helped fibro pain, I hate to think of what kind of pain I'd be in without the drug! Very recently, I was advised to speak with my neurologist re: other preventive meds, and to my rheumatologist re: another pain inhibitors if I go off Gabapentin. The reason why the psychiatrist (who monitors all of my meds) advised me to consult with the prescribing doctors is because of my desperate plea to end the side effects of whatever drug was causing the daily cognitive impairment to the degree I cannot work, or engage in conversation (because I get lost in it, lose my train of thought, and/or forget the word(s) I'm trying to grasp), or follow more than 1 instruction. It is quite possible I'll have to continue with Gabapentin and adjust accordingly, but I so want to improve my quality of life, even if I have to remain unemployed. by FELIX from Gamerco, NM
