I have been taking this medication since i was 15 (4 years in total) in tandem with an as needed prescription of low mg Adderall for intensive periods of study. While in high school it worked wonders, school was a breeze, i could barely pay attention in class, study before a test for an hour or two and expect an A- or higher, and i rarely used my adderall (during midterms and finals almost exclusively). However, since leaving for college i have stopped taking strattera for extended periods of time, a month or two at most (not by choice, i just forget). But what i have noticed is that once off strattera my ability to focus takes an extreme nose dive. But the level my attention, memory and over all mental facility drops to is actually worse than it was before i started strattera. That is to say once off strattera i am worse off than before i started taking it. Also when off of it i began having the side effects commonly associated with the drug, suicidal thoughts were not really an issue but mild depression was. The best way to explain it is from the movie Limitless (great movie btw) the effects of coming off the drug in that movie are similar to that of coming off strattera (not to the extremes in the movie of course). I do not know whether these effects are permanent, as i said before, i always end up going back on it, but i dont think i can foresee a day when i can stop taking this drug completely, the side effects of stoping are to severe. I would highly caution anyone considering this drug, especially parents with teenagers. It really works but i dont believe having to take it for the foreseeable future is worth the benefits. As a disclaimer, i have been on it for 4 years, it is possible that i am merely noticing how unfocused i was before going on it simply by comparison but i doubt it. I have been having problems with BAD headaches and along with the headaches came speech pronlems . I went to see a Neurologist and after several test he perscribed this medication for me . Of course we are still trying to find out what is causing the headaches, speech problems, muscle twitching and eye pain along with a droopy eye! I was diagnosed with PTSD and depression in June of this year, my psychologist put me on Levitra with Dapoxetine, 20mg once a day and to take it at night...that didnt do anything, so she put me on 40mg to take ar night!...That was a big mistake...that medication almost 30 minutes after taking t made me want to choke someone out!! Im NOT a violent person...never have been....but that medication made me a monster! Personally I believe theres been a misdiagnoses and I should be treated for possibly being bipolar! Im not a Dr. but I do have enough experience int the medical/mental health field, to know whats going on...and I do know myself better than she knows me, she met me ONCE...had me give her a run down of my life and meet with a pyschiatrist twice to decide that i've got PTSD and Im depressed! Im NOT depressed, I have chronic pain, but Im being treated for that, Ive got kids and a wonderful man...a great family and life...theres no reason to be depressed! Needless to say I took myself off the drug...regardless of the warnings...it was better to do that, than harm someone!! DONT TAKE THIS MEDICATION, IF YOU CAN AVOID IT...DO SO! BEST WISHES TO FINFING SOMETHING THAT WORKS WELL FOR YOU! I'm still holding onto hope theres something better, that WONT cause weight gain...I just spent the last 5 yrs losing 250+ lbs! I'd rather be thin and struggle with being bi-polar, than FAT AND STRUGGLE! It seems theres no happy medium these days!
