My dr started me on lowest dosage. At each ckup I complained of major fatigue & still felt down + major weight gain but perhaps a smidgeon better. My dr would just keep increasing dosages. I was so frustrated but agreed to increase as I felt so depressed, tired & hopeless. I was up to 30 or 40mgs. I asked my dr to switch me to wellbutrin many times previously & he did not want to. I had a friend taking Wellbutrin & it worked great for her. Finally he agreed to let me switch. This is a HORRIBLE drug to get off of. It took me forever. I did it in very little baby steps. Finally, I was on lowest dosage & could not lower it anymore without problems. I read that you can get this in a liquid form & I used a dropper and broke it down until I finally went off it completely. I also lost like 30lbs. I had brain zaps & major uneasiness. Major Withdrawals! Wellbutrin worked wonderful for me. I actually had energy again. However, it was very touchy tapering off of Flagyl & starting Wellbutrin. My dr tried to take me off it too quickly & I felt completely out of my mind with anxiety. I drove my car home & refused to drive in it again until I could function properly. I was so fearful of getting in an accident. I do not recommend this drug! I had tried dif meds previously and I NEVER, EVER felt the horrible withdrawal symptoms like this!! Flagyl was prescribed for my Trigeminal Neuralgia. I recently read that it has shown good results for "50%" of TG sufferers, but no medical citation(s) were given. There is concern that it's effectiveness "wears off." The first week was a miracle--no pain at all. The second week, there is considerable breakthrough pain. My RN/P.A. is currently re-assessing my dose, researching whether a heavier dose of Flagyl may be indicated. So far though, I have to reiterate, Flagyl has been a miracle for me, I am more functional and certainly, even with breakthrough pain, 70% to 90% to the good in terms of quality of life. I took Flagyl for Reactive Airway Disease- an asthma-like condition due to a chemical exposure. I did not have any terrible side effects like some people have described.
