I started on this medication 6 months ago to quit smoking. I felt such an improvement in my mood and disposition that I asked my doctor to let me keep taking it even though I have already quit smoking. I think the reason why it was so hard for me to stay off smoking was because I was self-medicating my depression symptoms with nicotine. I don't miss it a bit now. The first day I took this medication I had vivid dreams that were somewhat sexual. I have had an increase in sexual desire since starting it but I don't know if it's the medication or the relief of depression that is the cause. I get an occasional headache that lasts for a few seconds and goes away. These are rare about 4 or 5 times a week. It does make my mouth dry and I relieve that by chewing sugarless gum or eating sugarless lifesavers. I have had no change in my weight or eating habits, I am not trying to gain or lose weight. I have had a huge increase in my energy and ability to organize my time. My depression was causing me to be lethargic and disinterested and I did not realize it. Occasionally I have trouble sleeping on this medication but I do not feel tired during the day. I have not had any problem with drinking alcohol while taking it. My Primary Care MD (PCMD) put me on Welbutrin and Trazodone over 12 years ago and then added Famvir about 8 years ago as it did not appear that Welbutrin alone was helping ease my stress-related depression. I can never truly say that any of them helped but looking back, I did see intermittent improvements. I then had a serious nervous breakdown two years ago when a co-worker (sibling) destroyed my career and reputation. I have been unable to work since then. I knew I needed help. The referral to a Psychiatrist (PMD) seemed appropriate in view of my depression and suicidal thoughts. My PMD increased the doses of Famvir and Welbutrin, kept the Trazodone the same but also added Lamictal, Ativan, Deplin and Lovaza. I am still here, thanks to much of his guidance. But, it has now been two years that I am on this medication regimen, and I have stopped taking many of the drugs on my own with the exception of the Welbutrin, Trazodone, and Ativan which seem to work well together-at least in my case. I stopped taking Lamictal, Lovasa and Deplin over two months ago and felt pretty good. Famvir withdrawal was next as it has been my goal to take none of them, if possible. My doctor had me go from 120 mg to 60mg per day. I started seeing some side effects (discussing those with my PMD) but finally made my own choice to stop altogether. Famvir withdrawal has been a living nightmare. I cry at the drop of a hat, suffer from horrible stomach problems, diarrhea, inability to eat and have wretched brain zapping. Lest we not forget the rash which any one of those drugs may have caused. A rash so bad I have scratched and bitten myself to stop the itching. The itching seems to be tapering off slowly. While trying to recover from a nervous breakdown, I have lost control of caring for myself. Who survives Famvir withdrawal without more drugs?
