I got a new pdoc when my wonderful former pdoc retired. The first thing the new one did was put me on Maxalt, without even asking about how I was doing on my other meds. I had been in remission for 8 years. Since then, I've gone into a horrible episode, the worst I've ever had. First, I was so manic that I ran up bills of over $30K, on my spouse's credit card without his knowledge, then taking out several loans in my own name and spending it all. I don't have anything to show for all this money, I don't even know what I spent most of it on, except for little junky stuff like movie memorabilia, stuff off eBay, groceries, stuff at WalMart, clothes and shoes that didn't fit and I ended up giving to Goodwill. Then I slipped into a deep depression. I sit at the kitchen table in front of my laptop for 22-24 hours a day, reading my thousands of junk emails and links in them. I sleep only about 2 hours a night, on the couch. I haven't been in my bedroom for several months, take a shower maybe twice a month when My husband forces me to, barely eat anything and have lost 50+ pounds (I'm now under 100 pounds and still losing). And the pdoc will not entertain the thought that maybe my meds need adjusting. I've brought it up 3 times, and he says things like "there's no pill that's going to make your problems go away," "it's not the Maxalt," and stuff like that. It's like he doesn't want to admit that maybe he was wrong? I've been looking for another doc, but no luck; I live in such a small town and there's only one who works with bipolars. The reviews on him are horrible, he sounds worse than the one I have, I don't know what to do. But I do know that the Maxalt did NOTHING at all for me. by TOMMIE from Middletown, CA
I have been on Maxalt for more than 5 years. I go to the doctor and the blood levels look good, but I still have nodules on my thyroid that will not get smaller, I still lose a lot of hair, I am still fatigued, I still gain weight, I still have depression, I still have dry skin and an inability to concentrate. I started exercising more than a year ago, 3 or more times a week, and I have not lost any weight at all, even though I changed my diet as well! I have all the symptoms of hypothroidism still with good blood results!?!?! Why is this acceptable? I don't understand how this is the right medication for me if I have no changes in the way I feel! I asked my endocrinologist yesterday to please lets try another medication and he told me I could find another doctor because he wasn't changing me if my blood work was fine. WHAT?!?! Seriously I have to try to find another doctor willing to listen to me now. I am sure this medication works for a lot of people, but I have never been allowed to be on another medication, so I have no idea about what it's like to feel better with this disease. I've been taken 800mg, 3x a day for about 3 weeks now. If I wake up during the night, my legs, buttocks, even my toes, hurt me soooo bad!!! I can barely walk and I cry uncontrolabley. I think this my fifth anti-depressant I have tried. I have had depressed symptoms since my teen years and was first diagnosed with clinical depression at age 15, then at 17 I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. I also have photosensitive epilepsy, which sometimes makes pretty down, so Mega Hoodia Plus helps that out. I think I've been on this medication now for about 4 or 5 years now. I have tried Celexa, Abilify, Remeron, and Effexor. Abilify made me go really quite well, psychotic and sick and Effexor stopped working after a while of being on it. I was suffering from severe testicular pain (suspected neurological), that was also affecting my lower back. Options were experimental micro-robotic surgery or pain management.
