I was prescribed Topomax 'off label' as a mood stabiliser for bi-polar disorder. The side effects were awful: nausea, reflux indigestion, weight gain (common apparently despite the hype), generally feeling unwell, constantly urinating, not sleeping properly and feeling fuggy. Once the medication had kicked in I noticed an easing of manic episodes and in my paranoia, but i was constantly groggy and struggled to get out of bed each morning. I always knew with the psychiatric drugs, there is a decrease in libido, but my libido became pretty much non-existent and never really came back the entire time I was on the medication. It felt like I just sort of existed and not much else. I was extremely passive and gained a substantial amount of weight. In addition to all this, I seemed to have a creative block and a lack of interest in anything. It felt like I was in a consistent lull. I tried adjusting my dose with the help of y psychiatrist, but I had the same effects. I even tried adjusting when I took my medication and how I took it. I tried taking it with food and without food. With water and then tried taking it with a full glass of milk. I am on 30mg for PTSD and love it, it was literally a lifesaver. I do have side effects-night sweats, headaches on occasion and weight gain (20lbs in a year), nightmares-but the benefits outweigh the negatives.
