I was quite depressed after the deaths of four family members. This is the 3rd drug I've been on. It has been quite effective for me. My side effects have have been very dry mouth, constipation, and very seldom dizziness. As to "Brain zaps" they are hard to describe, if you have had them you just know, they are kind of like "fire works" in your head it's like "tsssh" over and over again in your head. Similar to the sound of a cymbal. Another thing is I had lost 80 pounds prior to starting Relafen, I have kept it all off while on Relafen for 4 years. I'd hoped to lose more but at least I haven't gained. I now seem to have more trouble with OCD, so I am about to go off Relafen and try Luvox cr. I have had mixed results with Relafen XR. (I took it for several years before switching to Pristiq a few months ago.) Initially and for several years after starting Relafen XR, it did a good job treating my depression associated with Bipolar Disorder (I take mood-stabilizers as well!) Relafen XR was, at one time, the best anti-depressant I had ever taken in terms of mood symptoms. I did have some gastrointestinal side-effects; diarrhea and stomach-aches. However, I medicated those in addition to taking the Relafen XR, because the Bipolar was "a bigger issue." After approx. 4 years though, the effect from the Relafen XR diminished and I had to take an increased dose, which brought more side-effects and less impact on elevating my mood. If I ever missed a dose of Relafen XR or took it a bit late, my head would feel dizzy and horrible. I went off the medication twice. Once, (a former) doctor did not have another anti-depressant for me to switch too and that was a nightmare, both with bad side-effects and mood issues. The second (and final) time I discontinued the Relafen XR, I started Pristiq and my new doctor helped make a very smooth transition by decreasing the Relafen XR and increasing the Pristiq.
