I have been taking this drug on and off for several years (usually around 75mg/night), primarily for severe anxiety (sometimes a little psychotic). I also have a history of major depression and 2 manic episodes. I do not know if these meds have an effect on my depression because that lifted 4 yrs ago and hasn't returned, and my moods are stable. I suspect that it helps because this is the longest period that I have ever been depression-free. Because of the sedating effects, I definitely feel less anxiety, and so far it has been the only medication that has helped me (I have tried many over the last 14 years). Some anxiety remains, and I still get panic attacks, so I will have to start something else as well. The drug has not been as scary as many of these reviews, but I am on a relatively low dose. Also, don't be turned off by people who complain about the initial side effects. This med takes a long time to stabilize. For the few weeks I was so tired I could barely function, but it was less every day. Now I just need a morning coffee and I'm good. If I miss a dose it is really obvious because my anxiety sky-rockets again. The only side effect of concern is extreme irritability and emotional volatility in the morning that declines as the afternoon approaches. I'll snap at my lovely husband for no reason at all, so have learned to walk away and avoid him when that happens (only about once every few weeks). It's like really bad PMS in the mornings. Took this drug at 9:00am following my Dr's Appt along with some peanut butter crackers and a non-carbonated drink as directly by the pharmacist. Then I headed off to the office. About 11:00am I started feeling nauseated but thought it would pass. By 11:30 I got up to head to the restroom because I was really feeling bad but before I could get to my door I had to grab the waste basket and began to vomit. I felt better followng that but about 5 minutes later I had another round of vomiting, sweating and severe itching. Long story short; by 1:00pm I was being taken by ambulance to the hospital where I continued to vomit in 5 to 10 minute intervals until they could get me in a room and medicated. Had to have an IV to replace fluids lost and missed the next 2 days of work trying to recover. My daughter had a similar experience with the same drug while driving from New Orleans to Baton Rouge. She starting vomiting while she was driving and had to pull over and call 911 to get help. MISERABLE, MISERABLE Drug. Went back to the Z-Pak. After trying everything, Inderal xr was the only thing that worked for my deep depression with the anxiety and panic attacks. When it seems like it isn't working anymore, increase your dose. After 5 years, I am having a problem with it working for me, so my doctor is now adding to it. Also, try Vitamin B's, which really helps too. I have experienced a change in the meds when I have to take antibiotics, and have seen my molar teeth crumble.
