I am a 25 year old female full-time student and I have had severe panic attacks since the age of 19. I was first prescribed .25mg of xanax 2 years ago and have since upped the dosage to .5mg. The smaller dosage didn't really help that much, but when i moved to .5mg I really noticed a difference. The main point I want to make is that while xanax does help if you feel a panic attack coming on, or if you are in a situation you are nervous about, but it DOES NOT prevent panic attacks from occuring. It is a tranquilizer. I am going back to my doctor to see about getting on an antidepressant that is used for panic. I will, however, continue taking xanax as needed. Medicine has been great treating my anxiety and depression. I have tried paxil, zoloft, welbrutin, prozac none worked like this drug. Do have the side effect of elongnated ejactulation during sex and sometimes the most basic of words don't come to me and its frustrating. I take 300mg. a day and the side effects are pretty tough if you come off of it. I have resigned the fact that I will be on a drug for my life for depression and anxiety and in no way would I go back to the life I had prior to this medication. I could only take this med for about a week and a half. I couldn't sleep at all. I have a 2 mo. old baby who wakes up about every 2 hrs. or so , so by the time I would fall asleep, the baby would be waking up again. Also, I had no memory at all. I felt like I was in a constant fog, like I was too doped up to even think straight. I've heard that maybe I should have kept taking it longer, but there was no way I could do that. I couldn't even function and I have children to take care of. My husband was the first to notice I wasen't being myself.
