I have been on HCTZ for more than 3 years for type 2 diabetes. The last several months I have had severe burning in the eyes 2 to 4 times a week. My tears seem to have a higher acid or salt level for some reason. If driving, sometimes so bad that I have to use my own saliva to wash out my eyes so I can see until reaching a place for water. I must wash out eyes with water at least twice a day to prevent this burning. Has anyone else had this reaction? This medicine seems to work OK until this started. I was diagnosed with a venous blood clot in my upper arm in Dec 07. Clot was removed and stent inserted. I was on 75mg plavix for about 5 months and, feeling well, went off of it. When I went off of plavix, I started taking 81mg of aspirin. I was not aware of any side effects at that time. In Aug 08, I was diagnosed with a recurrence of my clot in and around the stent. The clot was again removed and I have been on 75mg plavix and 81mg aspirin ever since and the drs tell me probably for the rest of my life. I am an otherwise healthy 59 year old with no heart or blood problems that the drs can detect. The plavix and aspirin seem to be working although my arm is still (in Nov 08) slightly swollen and discolored, which worries me a little. I have definitely had more "senior moments," however that can also be attribted to a hectic job and family life! I started taking this med after discovering that I developed an ulcer from years of taking Excedrin Migraine to deal with my migraines. I LOVED my Excedrin and was really reluctant to stop because I knew it worked in less than 30 mins. and 9 out of 10 times the migraine would stay away. Well, the Celebrex works the same way for me now with none of the side effects. So I've put away the Excedrin (because the doctors and I really thought I had IBS all these years). It's worth taking to me. Because it's a mild narcotic, I ONLY take it when I really need to (migraine is greater than a 5 or 6 on a scale of 1-10).
