I would begin by stating I believe in this drug and how it works with individuals that really need it, I have been on and off of it for 4 years. I do not take more than one to two times a day and a max of 1mg and never take your doses on a regular 4 hour schedule. This is how I have kept from becoming addicted, as advised by my doctor. It has worked. Now with saying all of that I then have to add that one of my best friends was also on this medication and she became addicted and when it was no longer enough she turned to pain meds and she is now a true pill popping addict. So be very cautious and listen to your body. I have severe panic attacks so I do understand when others state they have to have it to function. I say to that look at your schedule and think about when the best time of the day maybe when you are alone that you can skip doses so that you never become addicted. Started this med 5 years ago. It allowed me to sleep. I stopped taking it over the past 3 months. It became too expensive. Asked my doctor to try something else and I was told it is not habit forming. If I missed one dose I could not sleep at all. It took me 3 months to wean off of it. Now, I cannot sleep at all. I have been on this medication for about 6 years and it has been great! At first I had fairly strong side effects, but they have decreased tremendously. I lost a lot of weight and suffered from drousiness for the first two years, but that has completely gone now. My hands and feet only tingle when I move from a cold environment to a warm one. I have a little trouble with word-finding, and my overall congnative function is a bit slower, but not too bad.
