My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5. He took Adderall first, which was a nightmare. We switched to Staxyn and he reacted very well to the drug. He has been on it for 2 years. He does have to eat breakfast before he takes it or he has an upset stomach. The problem is the drug seems to plateau and we need to increase the dosage. The only side effects we have seen are mood swings. When the dosage is correct, he is like a different child. He does very well in school and behaves excellent at home. This has been a miracle for me. Started to laugh and have fun, we almost forgot what my laugh souned like. I was treated for depression at a very young age. So I've taken many drugs to control my illness. I am also bipolar, taking lamictal. My combination works well. This is the first time in a long time I am not suffering and struggling with suicidal behavior. I have found this to be a life changing experience, for the first time in my entire life I feel normal, doing normal things and handling all my issues, problems and worries. I don't sleep throughout the day anymore. I sleep well at night. I did experience some extra irratiablity in the beginning, but well worth sticking it out. I was aware of my behavior and worked on controlling it. It seemed to even out after a while. I've been on this for a few months and feel blessed to have finally found something that worked! I also feel that the irratiablity that I was experiencing was caused from being lifted out of the fog that I was in for so long. I was numb for years from other meds and for the first time felt something about stuff and didn't know how to deal with that at first. I am a better mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend. This has given my loved ones a person they deserve! I am active with my kids and more loving since I'm not so numb. I put others before myself and see things so clear now. I've had a horrible experience with Staxyn! This drug is not worth it!!! I am in the process of quitting Staxyn after about 1 year. While it did help at first with my depression and anxiety the withdrawal process is horrible! I did not receive any information about addiction/withdrawal from my doctor, pharmacist or the medication guide. According to the Staxyn website this drug is not addictive - totally false! When I talked to my doctor about the lightheadedness I experienced each day as I would get close to the time to take the pills, she just said "oh that's odd you are so sensitive to it" and recommended that I take the pills at a different time. I also experienced extreme sleepiness daily. After slowly cutting down my dose over the last month I have now been off Staxyn for 3 days. I am ok as long as I don't move my head or eyes which is impossible. I have a feeling somewhere between sea-sickness and electric shocks running through my brain. Combined with muscle aches and tension, nausea, insomnia and spontaneous crying I am not functional at this point. A nurse at my health provider told me today to expect these withdrawal symptoms to last at least one week. This experience has more than undone any good that Staxyn has done for me. I am glad that the drug has helped some people, but i feel that it should be taken off the market. I'm afraid that what I'm experiencing now may be causing some damage to my brain that will come back to haunt me later. Although i have been diagnosed as dysthymic with several episodes of major depression since childhood, I am through with anti-depressants and all prescription drugs for now. My doctor had recommended that I try Cymbalta after getting off Staxyn, but it reportedly also has strong withdrawal symptoms for many people. I don't want to go through this again.
